"Anne with and E" is a Canadian series that is available in the catalog of NETFLIX. It is based on the 1908 novel called "Anne of Green Gables" which is set in the late 19th century.
The series tells the story of the orphan Anne Shirley, until she arrives at Green Gables and start a new life, when adopted by Marilla Cuthbert and Matthew Cuthbert. The brothers owning the Green Gables farm.
My Si Fu says that it is possible to do everything with art. He usually catches my eye when I do something rudely. Since the term "Kung Fu" (功夫) brings together three ideograms that among so many possibilities, they can also express the idea of a "worked energy".
(Sinologist François Jullien speaks of Chinese painting and calligraphy in one of his books, to make explicit concepts of classical Chinese logic.)
So it's like you make a drawing or a painting. You may have the ability to do it to the point of appearing real or "well done", but not necessarily that drawing or painting will have "Kung Fu". You did not go beyond the apparent. Skill makes the work contemplate the "visible", but not "invisible," or "immanent" aspects of the art.
François Jullien, the brilliant French sinologist, calls this concept of using Kung Fu in a painting or drawing as "Lines of life through the landscape". The ancient Chinese, according to him, understood painting as the act of "offering a symbolic force delimited by the brush strokes."
(Instagram Print from my Master Julio Camacho: "We start wondering why this movie is a musical ... And it ends with the certainty that there is no way it can not be a musical La La Beautiful!")
Enxergamos algo parecido, quando no episódio 4 de "Anne with an E".
Then in 2016, I see with surprise the positive review of my Si Fu to the movie "La La Land". I had the opportunity to talk to him before watching the movie, about why he liked it. "It's a show of direction" - He would have said - "The film has no cuts." - Completed.
I was deeply moved by the story and the soundtrack, but I was also aware of the director's invisible work, which films the entire first act of the play, in a "sequential plan"! This is "Kung Fu".
We see something similar, when in episode 4 of "Anne with an E". The director makes a wonderful sequel to my favorite character (Gilbert) chopping wood. And only with the act of chopping the wood, of being collected, taken in and used to warm the house. We understand the reality of the character in a few seconds.
Another time we see a director´s lesson. That's when Anne needs to go to school for the first time. Nervous for feeling ugly due to the color of her hair, as well as other physical features that bother her. We followed her into the classroom, with the camera shaking behind her following her steps with the vision plane under her perspective. Likewise, this feature is used when she runs away from school running and crying back to Green Gables. The camera shakes even more!
"Anne with an E" : Uma obra de arte desde a abertura.
"Anne with an E": A work of art since the opening.
"Anne with an E" is a work of art since the opening sequence. Idealized by art director Alan Williams and painting artist Brad Kunkle. The opening proposes to mix new works of the artist with reinterpretations of some of his old works. And what we see, is the story of the first season in a few seconds ...
The artist Kunkle seeks to trace, through his incredible paintings, a relationship of the feminine with nature. And seeks, along with Art Director Alan Williams, to express Anne's multiform sensitivity. To do so, they use rather symbolic animals and phrases of Anne carved into trees.
("Anne with an E" . Brad Kunkle)
The first animal that appears in the opening is the fox. And just as the ideogram expressing "absolute negation" in Chinese (不) represents a pigeon trying to touch the sky as a way of saying that such action is impossible. This painting can express a dream with unattainable causes. Which portrays Anne's life before arriving at Green Gables.
In addition, the fox within the Canine Family is an animal that lives in small groups or alone. And that could be related to the past of the character, since in the first episode when we see her travel by train towards Green Gables, when she hears a child cry, she is immediately referred to a traumatic experience that she had to deal with herself.
("Anne with an E" . Brad Kunkle)
This is clear, when we look at the following picture, in the words carved by Anne: "My life is a perfect cemetery of buried hopes".
Um olhar além do senso comum.
A look beyond common sense.
" . Depois desta conversa, repensei o uso do meu cordão (risos).
This look that goes beyond common sense, has always been promoted by Si Fu. In the picture above for example, it was my birthday twelve years ago. I had gained a necklace of a character I liked very much. It was a cross in which the upper extremity was a lion head and the lower a very fine tip. As soon as Si Fu saw me with the necklace, Si Fu took the lion's pendant inside his closed hand, leaving only the thin point between his fingers out. He said, while pretending to stick the tip in my neck: "You would have died with your own necklace." - I never wore the necklace again.
Recently, having seen me many times with a gold necklace. He asked me at one of our Tuesday dinners, "Why are you always in the necklace?" . - I found the question curious and answered something like, "I think it suits me." - He smiled and asked, "Tell me three people you think has charm."- After I answered, he laughed and asked again: "How many of them wore necklaces?"- After this conversation, I rethought the use of my necklace (laughs).
("Anne with an E" . Brad Kunkle)
A abertura de "Anne with an E" segue, mostrando desta vez pássaros.
The opening of "Anne with an E" follows, showing birds this time. These animals usually sing at dawn, and according to the Art Director, represent the small joys of Anne to be adopted..as a new moment that begins in her life, as well as a new dawn.
She comes to discover her worth thanks to people who like her. And she discovers that the problem of not being accepted was not in her, but in others: "I've been searching for my dreams outside. So I discovered, that it's not about what the world has to offer, what you offer to it. "
("Anne with an E" . Brad Kunkle)
This process leads her to make peace with herself, as depicted in the dizzying painting we see acima. We note, however, that Anne greets herself with the same hand.
("Anne with an E" . Brad Kunkle)
Then the image is doubled as if it were a page being turned, showing the same greeting as if it were an image reflected in a mirror.
All this process of rediscovery of Anne, is due to the human relations that she begins to establish from her arrival at Green Gables. According to François Jullien: "... The reality of things only exists - and therefore only manifests - globally, thanks to the force of propensity that unites the various elements among each other ..."
("Anne with an E" . Brad Kunkle)
Finally, we see an owl. An animal that according to the artist represents wisdom. This is interesting, because due to Anne's past, she seems to see the world in a deeper way not only that the youth her age, but also some of the adults.
This is clear, when in episode 6, Anne is called by her best friend Diana Barry, to rescue her younger sister, who has the spectacular name "Minnie May Barry" (laughs). Who can not breathe. The aunt of the two who was in the house, does not know what to do and still disturbs, when Anne appropriates the situation and saves the child, due to having already taken care of cases like this in other situations.
The owl is also in an attacking position. What, according to the artist, represents the turn of the character when it is increasingly positioned with what it knows is right. As in the scene illustrated above Anne responds to the neighbor of the Cuthbert, after she was rude to Anne.
Si Fu (photo) usually says that within the Chinese strategy, it is not interesting to request the authorship of a process. And even if you do not order, but the authorship falls on you, something was not well done. He comments that everyone remembers the name of the "Hero", but that no one knows the name of the good strategist. Because if the strategy is well performed, the authorship is diluted and does not fall on the strategist
Anne's character has tragedy and drama in each of her sentences. This feature provides several uncomfortable situations for the character, such as when she adorns her hat before entering the classroom in episode 3, and draws attention to become a highlight in relation to the whole as she steps into the room.
In addition, at other times, there is a resistance of the people in accepting Anne, because she is so different from the majority. The rarity of her personality, however, conquers all of them.
I was a bit worried about what the relationship between Anne and Gilbert being the actress so young, would look like. But, fortunately, the interaction between them is wonderful and the couple is still unbeatable in this version too.
Anne Shirley did not see in herself physical characteristics that favored her. However, the beauty that came from within, thanks to the different mishaps that lived, immediately captivate Gilbert who saves her on the way to school.
This fact is explicit when he tells her friends in episode 4 when asked what he had seen in an orphan: "When it comes to beautiful girls, it does not matter where they come from."
I recently told Si Fu(photo) at one of our dinners about a simple personal fulfillment of mine. I commented: "Some people dream of having expensive cars, an apartment, but this was one of my dreams." - Si Fu then commented: "For this very reason, that you should not lessen your dreams."
So, although Gilbert's sudden interest in Anne as we see in episode 4 (photo) , when we see him firmly insisting that she pay attention to him and later, to review his view of him seems impossible. Francois Jullien says that the Chinese painting artists differed from the cartographers because they were not trapped by reality. According to him, the geography of the painter or the poet distances itself from the topographical truth.
He says that the landscape of both seeks to rely on symbolic tension. "It is reported that Wang Wei painted banana trees in the snow, and he did the same with his poetry. The tension of the impossible leads to the overcoming of the common vision, opens to the dream ..."
I wondered why this series touched me so much. The answer was easy. But despite that, I identified myself with a female character who talks about the use of the imagination in each scene. The ability to dream. What if we stop to think, in effect, what is art? It would not capture and use through the gesture as in the martial arts, of the brush as in the paintings, in the ordering of the cicles, as in the strategy. All possible effectiveness?
So I guess even dreaming , when we are using the imagination. It is possible to do with art.
